What We Do

The Swedish Film Program at the Swedish American Museum aims to bring the best of contemporary Swedish cinema to the heart of Chicago. Sweden has always been associated with great film-making, but we feel there’s something special that’s been occurring up there the last 15 years or so and it needs to be showcased over here - this side of the Atlantic - so that’s why this program was born.

We have monthly screenings on the fourth Thursday of each month, with a summer break in August and a holiday break during November and December. Typically, we’ll have doors opening at 7 o’clock with a show time of 7:30. There is a suggested donation of $5 at the door, $3 for museum members. We encourage people to come early and stay afterwards to take part in the refreshments and popcorn we’ll be serving. There should be plenty of interesting people and good conversation to go around, too.

Each movie is brilliantly projected from DVD onto a large screen via our top-notch digital projector. We will be featuring the original audio, but not to worry since we will ensure the all of our screenings have English subtitles too. And we’ll be rocking the audio through two-channel Peavey speakers, the same ones used at your high school dance (if you grew up in the 80’s at least). We also use state-of-the-art fold-out chairs, roughly half of which will be dressed with a fluffy cushion.

Information

The museum is located up in the Andersonville neighborhood on Chicago’s Northside just north of Foster at 5211 N. Clark St. The closest El stop is the red line Berwyn stop about 4 blocks east. There are plenty of buses on Clark St., but we’ve no idea which numbered line goes where so we’ll leave that in your hands. If you’re driving, there’s metered street parking on Clark and Foster, along with more parking available on the smaller, residential, side streets surrounding the museum.
